Chappie is an American science fiction film released in 2015. It is co-written and realized by Neill Blomkamp. The main actors are Sharlto Copley, Yolandi Visser, Watkin Tudor Jones, DEV Patel and Hugh Jackman. Chappie was filmed in Johannesburg and it is about an intelligent law enforcement robot purchased by the South African government from weapons manufacturer Tetravaal, to combat the high crime rate in Johannesburg. Chappie grossed $31.6 million in North America and $70 million in other territories for a total gross of $102.1 million, against a budget of $49 million.
In Johannesburg, in the near future, where crimes are increasing at an unexpected rate, the police urges the South African Government to call Tetravaal, specialized in robotics and run by Michelle Bradley (Sigourney Weaver), to provide them with scout robots. These robots were developed by Deon Wilson (Dev Patel), a young and a brilliant engineer who works on developing an artificial intelligence. Deon Wilson is trying to develop robots with the human mind characteristics, which are capable of thinking and feeling emotions. However, Tetravaal CEO, Michelle Bradley, refuses to let Deon test the artificial intelligent on police robots.
On the other side, a competing project called Moose, developed by Vincent Moore (Hugh Jackman), a former soldier and an engineer, is not given equal attention by the police. This makes Vincent grows hatred towards Deon’s project and wants it to collapse, so that the police can choose his project Moose
Deon steals a robot carcass before it is destroyed. On his way, he is kidnapped by Ninja, Yolandi and Amerika, a group of gangsters, who asks him to reprogram the robot to fight for them and commit crimes. Deon installs the new software and reprograms the robot to function with the artificial intelligence. The robot is named Chappie. He must learn everything like a baby. The Ninja grows impatient and want him to learn to be a gangster; especially that Chappie’s irreplaceable battery is running out.
I find Chappie a fascinating film with the idea of creating a robot that can think and feel instead of shooting and making crimes.
