Setting up Your Home Theater System is as easy as 1, 2, 3
Your home theater system can come in a variety of sizes, colors and styles. While looking at the thousand-dollar system can impress some, really impress listeners by your ability to create a room filled with high fidelity sound.
Here are some basic steps and explanations for the components to your newest home theater system.
Basic Set-up
Each component of your surround sound system is designed to engulf you in heart-pounding, breathtaking sound when listening to your favorite albums or latest releases.
To get movie theater sound quality, put these basic tips into your home theater set-up. If you have a 5.0 surround sound system or less, remember that the center channel (orange) is to be placed directly under or behind your HDTV or project. The center channel provides front-firing sound that reproduces dialogue from TV shows, movies and music.
The surround sound, or satellite, speakers (green) sit behind the sitting area. The surround sound speakers assist in filling the room with key sound reproductions, such as explosions during a car chase or solo excursions. The tower speakers (blue) sit to the right and left of the HDTV and center channel, and house the tweeters and midrange drivers that produce the highest quality of sound in your whole system.
These speakers direct the soundtrack for the majority of the images seen on screen.
Building on your system
Surround sound systems range from as little as 2.0 to over 7.1, and enhancing your system only means enhancing your sound quality. Practicality should prevail, however. A studio apartment does not need a 7.2 surround sound system, and a large 400 square foot living room needs more than two surround sound speakers.
You can always build on your current system by adding in other components, which are typically more surround sound speakers or a subwoofer.
If your system does not come with a subwoofer, you can add it to the complete system and it will enhance the sound quality. A subwoofer delivers low-frequency effects, which most of us hear as the bass roaring across the floor.
When the walls shake, the subwoofer is really working hard to emphasize the explosions on screen. A subwoofer sits under the television, to the left or right of the center channel.
Get Creative
The guidelines recommended are just that – guidelines. Every audio enthusiast is different and prefers hearing sound in his or her own unique way. It is important to understand how each component of your home theater system works, and through understanding you can gauge how each speaker will impact the way you listen to music, movies or television shows.
Attach the surround sound speakers to the top corner of your living room to direct the sound downwards, providing a truly room-filling listening experience. Put the center channel directly behind the HDTV or projector to recreate movie moments seen in movie theaters.
